Mandela's Legacy

Now that we have studied Nelson Mandela's life, it is important to reflect on his legacy.  A legacy can be defined in many ways, but most definitions revolve around the impact a person had while he or she was alive.  It is how that person will be remembered and the contributions they made while they were alive.

Using your best thoughts and specific support for your ideas, please answer the question, "What is the most important part of Nelson Mandela's legacy?"

  1. To me, the most important part of Nelson Mandela's legacy was how he made a really big imprint in time and history. He made sure that he wanted everything to be fair between the races, no matter what the race they were. For example, after he was released from prison, the rest of the black community wanted to treat the whites just like all of the white people treated the black people. Nelson Mandela opposed this idea, because he really only wanted for the different races to be accepting with one another and not try to knock each other down. Nelson Mandela found peace with everything that he did. He stuck to what he felt, even having prison riding on the line. Also, when he was in prison, people would let him out as long as Nelson would do something the whites wanted. He opposed all of that and stuck to his guns, because he knew that he did nothing wrong, because opposing apartheid wasn’t that bad, because these rules were totally unfair and should not have been made.

  2. I think that the most important part of Nelson’s Legacy was when he found peace with the blacks and whites. That was the most important because all the blacks were being treated badly and all the white had the power. For example, the blacks had a tiny house and sometimes didn’t even have a bathroom. Also, if they had a bathroom it was a porter potty right outside their house at best. Another example, was the blacks couldn’t leave their “district” without a passport. Even though there was some more important things in Nelson Mandela’s legacy, I think that he found peace between the blacks and white was the most important thing he did.

  3. Nelson Mandelas most important piece of his legacy is protesting to change the law of the apartheid. He lead peaceful protests to get his point across when ever he could. He even joined a group called the A.N.C and worked for them for twenty years. The A.N.C was a group dedicated to change the law of the apartheid to make everyone equal. Eventually he and his followers saw light at the end of the tunnel and changed the law, making everyone have equal rights. Without his protests, South Africa might not have had changed and could still have blacks discriminated.

    1. Dear James,
I think your response is the strongest. I agree that the most important part of his legacy is protesting. I loved how you said there is light at the end of the tunnel

    2. I agree with you because when he joined the ANC that really did set him off to fight more for equal rights and I liked how you said that they saw light at the end of the tunnel.

  4. I think the most important part of Nelson Mandela’s legacy is how even though apartheid took 27 years of his life, he never took the chances to get out because he would have to leave everyone behind. Nelson Mandela did great things but he never forgot anyone along the way to a better life. I feel that he knows he could have never done what he did without those people, so why would he leave them in jail? He could have gotten out of jail earlier but he knew it was unfair. I think this is the most important because it shows that although Mandela did such great things and became famous and was well known, he never forgot who was there with him, and it wouldn’t be fair for Mandela to get out and not them.

  5. It is very important to reflect his legacy! His legacy that he left behind, was freedom for Black South Africans. I think he inspired a bunch of people. Every black in the world, felt him, and what he was doing. Nelson did a very great thing! Even though he went to jail for 27 to 28 years, every little thing he did was right. If I were being treated that way, I would stand up for my people! Nelson Mandela left behind a different world from when Blacks were considered dirty because of their skin color. Now Black South Africans are equal as White South Africans. I believe everything is great because it isn’t like where Blacks have to drink out of a different drinking fountain, sleep on different beds, and so much more! Nelson legacy was to have Black South Africans and White South Africans to be equal and it still stands and hopefully always stands.

    1. Hunter,
While I agree that Mandela did make an impact on the world, "every little thing he did was right," I don't agree with. Nobody can be perfect, and nobody can do everything right. People can try harder, and attempt to make something great, but nothing is perfect. Nelson was a great man who did amazing things. He stood up for what he believed in and didn't let anything get in his way, but he wasn't perfect.

  6. I believe that the most important part of Nelson Mandela's legacy was that he fought for what he thought was right. He didn’t want to hurt people, and he did things that he didn’t think were right (bombings) just to accomplish his vision. He tried not to hurt people, but in battles people get hurt. He was very patient as he waited to get out of prison. When he finally did, he accomplished his vision of black and white people being equal.

  7. Out of all the important parts of Nelson Mandela’s legacy, I personally think that the most important part is him leaving such a memorable example for the coming years. For example, after all he went to jail, he never gave up faith that him and his people would get out, and he taught us that if you have enough faith and hope towards something, you can get it accomplished eventually. He also left a racial impact in most of us. For instance, he put others before him, and he put himself through a lot just to make it fair for everyone. To wrap up, in my opinion the most important part of Mandela’s legacy is the impact he made and the example he set out for others.

  8. The most important part of Nelson Mandela’s legacy is when he got let out of jail and stopped segregation. I think this is the most important part because he stopped one of the biggest crises in South Africa and set an awesome example around the world. It was pretty amazing that he got awarded for all different kind of things but being imprisoned for 27 years and then becoming president is what he will be remembered by. Nelson grew up where rights were not fair to the black South Africans. Through his 20’s, he tried to stop the segregation with protests but that didn’t work. Finally, after he got released from prison, the presidential election came and Nelson finally had a chance to change the segregation and make history. That is what he will remember and what other people will remember.

    1. I agree with the main idea of your legacy. Nelson Mandela did stop segregation, but I think that he started to stop segregation even while he was in jail. Without being in jail, he might not have had the chance to stop segregation.

  9. The most important part of Nelson Mandela’s legacy is his strength to stand up for others and their rights (even in jail). When Nelson was thrown into jail, he still believed in what he wanted to and stood up for it. Nelson was very tough. He had an 8ft by 8ft cell and a tiny mat on the hard ground, but he still had the willpower to show others what he believed. Soon, Nelson even showed his leadership in the jail by leading passive protests. Three times Nelson was even asked if he wanted to leave the jail with conditions. For example, he could leave, but he would have to tell everybody what he believed in was wrong. All those times, he said “No.” He said this because he wanted to change the world. I remember seeing a quote that applies with Nelson Mandela, “Be the change you want to see in the world”. Nelson Mandela made a change and it impacted us all positively. If he didn’t do what he did, we might not be living as free as we are today.

    3. I agree with your comment. I agree with this comment because he did stand up for other people, yes it was also to better his life but mainly for others. In jail he refused because he knew he needed to help others and with the stupid conditions he could not. Your statement fits exactly what he was about and what he was fighting for!

    4. I agree. I think Nelson Mandela would continue his ways even if he was in jail for his entire life. He stood up for what mattered to him and refused to let anything get in the way. And I agree that this was a major part of his legacy.

    5. I like how you stayed on topic and used lots of detail to support your opinion. When you were describing his life in prison it brought a picture to my mind about what it looked like and how the were treated. I really enjoyed how you gave detail on how they offer for him to be able to leave jail, but there were conditions and he said no still. I also liked how you used a quote at the end of your response, it kind of summed up the paragraph and ended it in a great way.

  10. I think Nelson Mandela’s legacy is important because he changed the way black South Africans were being treated. I think his early adulthood was the most important. In his early adulthood he started a league that was called the ANC which was made up of people that didn’t like the way black South Africans were being treated. All of those people ended up going to jail for 27 years, for protesting against the government. They all got out and things started to change, Nelson Mandela was elected president. People were saying that the black South Africans should take over and treat the white South Africans just the way they treated them. But Nelson Mandela said no, he wanted things to be equal. Nelson Mandela will not only be remembered in Africa, but he will be remembered around the world.

  11. I think Nelson Mandela's legacy started when he was thrown in jail. By refusing to be let out when he was given many chances, he made an impact on the world. Mandela stood up for what he believed in, even if that means not being released from prison. He was a great man who did many inspiring things for the world.

  12. I believe that Nelson Mandela's biggest impact was the impact that he made on apartheid. Mandela had the courage to make South Africa a peaceful country, making peace between the Black South Africans and the white Dutch. Even though the Black South Africans wanted to have the Dutch in captivity after the blacks were freed from the Dutch, Mandela said no. It is not the right things to do. All people should be equal, no matter the skin color, no matter the race. I think this is the most important part of Nelson Mandela's legacy.

    2. I did not agree with how he showed how hard work really pays off, because If he did that he would have been barging and no one likes a bragger but every one loved him. So there for he s not a bragger, but other then that it was A Okay.

    3. Chris-I disagree in some way to your post. He worked hard to give equal rights, but he more persevered through the hardship to get equal rights.

  15. To me the most important part of nelson mandelas legacy is how he helped the balks get equal rights. If he had not fought to get equal rights then he would not have have been free when he was older. He also helped all of the blacks everywhere when he fought to get equal rights. So if he had not gotten blacks equal rights then they would not have the same rights as white people.

  16. The most important part of Nelson Mandela’s legacy in my opinion is apartheid because if that never happened then he might not be the man he is remembered for today. Apartheid was a law that stated that blacks did not have the same rights as whites in South Africa. If this law never took place he would never had wanted to balance the rights. He would have never had gone to jail and for all I know all of South Africa would be a totally different country. Apartheid was probably one of the worst laws put on black south africans because even if they left their village they would have to bring a passport and show it to anybody who asked to see it. If they did not have their passport they would be sent to jail. It wasn’t a fair law and Nelson Mandela knew he had to change it. He protested and would later go to jail and he knew as long as he tried he could stop Apartheid and balance the rights. Eventually Nelson Mandela got South Africa to change the laws and now because of him South Africa is a country with balanced rights.

    2. I disagree with you because if there hadn't been apartheid he wouldn't of had to do what he did. He still would have been a strong thinker, showed by the fact that he saw through apartheid. Lots of visionary people probably think: I wish I hadn't had to do what I did, but I am glad I did it. Nelson Mandela probably wishes that he hadn't had to of fought that battle, but he probably is glad he did.

  18. Nelson Mandela left behind a very important legacy. He made South Africa a country where people are treated equally. Nelson Mandela didn’t stop fighting. He noticed that he wasn’t treated the same as the white South Africans. That didn’t seem right to Nelson. Nelson wanted people to be equal so he started peaceful protest with people who felt like him. Nelson Mandela gave black South Africans a sense of freedom. This is why Nelson has such an important legacy.

  19. I think the most important part of Nelson Mandela’s legacy is that he fought for what he believed in nonviolently. It is hard to stand up to the people that have been superior to for you for all of your life, and Nelson had the courage to do so. And instead of fighting and harming people, Nelson helped black people earn their rights peacefully protesting. For most of his life, Nelson was in jail, but that did not stop the africans from retaliating. After many years, Nelson’s dreams came true and the blacks and white were finally seeing eye to eye.

  22. Nelson Mandela was a great person. He wanted to change people all around the world, and the people who treated black south africans poorly. Many people and countries around the the world heard about him through imprisonment. MAny people found out the conditions they were living in. Nelson Mandela was changed South Africa by making people feel poorly about how black south african’s were treated. Mandela started his own foundation where any people could go to this hospital and get help, no matter what they needed. The foundation made South Africa a bit more healthy with not as many people with transplants, wounds and burns. Nelson Mandela was a great man who went on to change South Africa.

  23. The most important part of Nelson Mandela's legacy is how he wanted everybody to be treated equal. This is important because if he didn’t stand up for what he believed in then he would not have been so famous. One of the reasons he is so famous is because he lived in prison for 26 years and he was told that he was going to die there, but he got out any way. Then he became president. One other thing is that when he was in prison he would not get out of prison on any conditions, and he was given the opportunity to get out 3 times. The impact he left on the world is that you should not be afraid to stand up for what you think is right.

  25. In my opinion the most important part of Nelson Mandela's legacy was when he decided to stand up for the black south africans. Nelson Mandela protested with the blacks, they made were meant to be peaceful but sometimes they got violent. Nelson was involved in some of the bombings they never intended for anyone to get hurt. Nelson was one of the main leaders of the group, he guided people and showed them that the can have freedom. He fought for the black south african people for years just to grant them equality with the white people. If Nelson Mandela had not made a change nothing would have changed and the whites would dictate the blacks. Eventually, in 1994 the black south african people were granted with rights. He made an extraordinary effort for his people, Nelson Mandela is now remembered for his courage, bravery and leadership.

  26. The most important part of Nelson Mandela’s legacy is that he was brave enough to stand up for equal rights. Black south africans weren't treated as well as white south africans. They couldn't leave without a pass, they could only live in certain areas, and in prison the only got to talk to someone for thirty minutes a year. Although blacks were the minority whites still controlled. Nelson Mandela and many others didn't think this was right, but Mandela was the only one who was brave enough to fight for what he believed. Not only was he the only one brave enough but he wanted equal rights. Most black south africans wanted to be in control. He knew that he would get sent to prison or maybe worse, but he was willing to fight. The most important part of Nelson Mandela’s legacy is being brave enough to fight for equal rights.

  27. I think that when Nelson Mandela was younger he realized that it was wrong to just sit there and watch all of his friends and family sitting there defenceless, not able to help themselves. I think that when Nelson and his friends went out and for w tried to stop what was happening he inspired other people to protect themselves. When Nelson Mandela’s dad died I think that it kind of lead to the reason why he stood up instead sitting down. When Nelson was in jail, Many more people were getting up and fighting for their rights. Also when he was in jail people thought that it was wrong to keep a man in there for so long and so they fought to get the right thing done. After Nelson was released many many more people were fighting for their rights because of Nelson Mandela. Because of Nelson Mandela, South Africa is not against Black South Africans or White South Africans. Nelson Mandela’s legacy made South Africa A non-opinionated country.

  28. Nelson Mandela left behind some things that makes us think thats why he is important. Nelson Mandela’s apartheid changed who he is and why people wanted him to be a leader. Nelson Mandela never left behind a single soul. Nelson could have gotten out of jail earlier than 27 years but he wouldn’t go until every one that came in with him was able to be free. He wanted everyone in South Africa to have a better life. He could have gotten out of jail but that would have only helped his life and not the others around him.

  29. Nelson Mandela was a great man, who wanted and changed the rights for everyone in South Africa. He is known all over the world for what he did. During Nelson Mandela's life he had to overcome many obstacles. These made stronger and more willing to speak about the problem with Apartheid. One key part of his legacy was his charity work. Nelson had made a foundation, this foundation was a hospital where all kids of any race, disability, or problem could be treated at. Nelson didn't care about what color their skin was he just wanted to make sure they were as healthy as possible. Another main idea of how he impacted the world is how he still rebelled about Apartheid during his 27 years in prison. When I first heard this I thought to myself how do you do that in prison. Well every day him and other prisoners would have to walk to a court yard and smash rocks into gravel, he rebelled by having all the prisoners walk slower so it would take longer to get there. Nelson Mandela's legacy will live on forever and people will remember it because of what he did to change the lives of the people in South Africa.

  30. I believe the most important concept about Nelson Mandela's legacy and impact is that even known his life had fallen apart in the past he let nothing stand in his away. For example when he was in jail he didn’t let the guards push him around and he was studying there culture and what they liked he studied his opponent and he let nothing stand in his way, and another example of Nelson Mandela’s legacy is when he was making non-violent protests for south american blacks to have the equal amount of rights that south american whites had he let nothing stand in his way these things had an impact showing he was never going to let his opinion of blacks and whites having equal rights and he whatever it took to make it right.

  31. Nelson Mandela, he was an astonishing person. He not only changed Africa forever but changed the world for ever. And I believe that was the most important part of his legacy. Nelson Mandela did many great things, he always keep his morals with him. Which help him alot when he was trying to get equal rights for everyone. In his legacy he helped the black south Africans get the same right as the white south African. But he didn't stop there, he wanted all of he bygones be bygones, he didn't want their still be tension between them. So he put on the jersey of the dutch team (white south African) to say what happened in the past is the past. Nelson came into the world that was unfair, but he left making it a little better, the most important of his legacy.

  32. I think the most important part of Nelson Mandela's legacy was when he ended aparthied. This was the most important part because that is what he is known for, making blacks equal. Even though Nelson was in jail for 27 years, he still carried out his dream and even became the first black president of South Africa. Therefore I think that Nelson Mandela was visionary because he wanted to end aparthied

    1. I totally agree with because that part of his legacy was very cool and interesting. It was also very important.

    2. I agree because it really is what happened and how he ended apartheid. I also agree with how he was in jail yet he still had protests.

    3. I agree with you because when he left his legacy one of the most important things that he did was he ended apartheid, and I like how you said that he became the first South African President, and how that was another important thing about his legacy.

  33. I think the most important part of Nelson Mandela’s legacy would have to be when was thrown in jail. It was a message that no matter what you can survive and stay strong until you get what you want. In this case Nelson Mandela’s quest was freedom for all races and all colors. When was thrown in jail he raised hope that it was possible to stop the fighting and change the south african community from the whites.

    2. I disagree with you because it think Apartheid was the biggest impact on Nelson't life, but i liked how you got your point out there and said how he did not stop fighting even when he was in jail.

    3. I disagree when you said " It was a message that no matter what you can survive and stay strong until you get out". I disagree because anyone could have been thrown in jail and get out but no one cares that you got out.

    4. I disagree with you because even though a third of his life was in jail, he didn't do anything to make him president or treated highly. Mandela just got people around the world is attention why he was in jail.

  34. I think that you really found the true meaning about Nelson Mandela's legacy. Peace and ending segregation is the most important and you included it. I really liked your blog

  35. Mitch- I agree with you because apartheid was a big impact on South Africa. It was not fair that the blacks did not have equal rights. I like how you talked about the village and what different things occurred.

  36. The blog response I agree with most is Jack D.’s. I agree with his because he explained how Nelson Mandela’s legacy was how he made a really big impact in history. I liked how Jack said that Nelson Mandela found peace in everything that he did, and that is very true. Jack also said things that I liked too, but I liked and agreed with that one the best.

  37. The blog response that I disagreed with was Audrey’s. I don’t believe that Nelson Mandela’s legacy was him being thrown into jail. Nelson Mandela’s time in jail might have impacted his legacy, but I don’t think his legacy is him being thrown into jail.

  38. I think that Nelson Mandela will always be remembered because of everything he did. He had peaceful protests but he got sent to jail. While he was in jail he still protested, the president made two offers to let Nelson out but he turned them both down because both of them didn't include that every one that got in jail with him couldn't go.
